When to Lime Your Lawn (and How Much to Use)

Lime raises soil pH when turf is growing in soil that is too acidic. It does not feed grass the way nitrogen does, and it does nothing useful on alkaline soil. If you have never seen a soil test, do not lime on habit.

Trust the lab rate over any generic chart. For established turf, common extension guidance is:
- If the recommendation is under about 50 lb/1,000 sq ft, apply it in one pass in fall or spring.
- If the recommendation is 50 to 100 lb, split between seasons.
- If it exceeds 100 lb, apply 50 lb per pass, retest, and continue until you reach the target.

Plan:

- Apply the remaining 30 lb/1,000 next season.
- Retest in 12 months.

In high-rainfall acidic regions, retesting every couple of years still beats annual blind liming. Once pH is in range, maintenance limestone may be occasional or unnecessary for long stretches.
