How Much Does Sod Cost?

Sod is priced by the square foot and delivered by the pallet. Two figures determine your total: price per square foot, and how much a pallet actually covers.

Regional availability matters more than the table suggests. Sod is heavy and perishable, so it is grown locally and you will find the grasses your region's farms actually produce. Ordering an unusual cultivar means freight from further away, and the freight can exceed the price difference.

Sod itself is often not the largest line on the invoice.

Removing an existing lawn before sodding is real work. Sod cutter hire runs $80–150 a day, and the removed turf is bulky, heavy waste that has to go somewhere.

Grading is where budgets get missed. If the ground needs levelling, or topsoil brought in to build a root zone, that can equal or exceed the sod cost. Four inches of topsoil across 5,000 sq ft is about 62 cubic yards, which is a significant delivery.

Sod costs roughly five to ten times more in material. What it buys is time, and the ability to install outside the seeding window, and reliable establishment on slopes.

Confirm pallet coverage. Anywhere from 400 to 500 sq ft is normal. On a 5,000 sq ft lawn, the difference between 400 and 500 is roughly three extra pallets.

Ask what preparation is included. "Installed" sometimes means laying sod on ground you prepared. Get grading, tilling, and old-lawn removal itemised.

Ask about the cut allowance. A quote based on your exact square footage with no allowance will run short on any lawn with curves.

Ask about delivery scheduling. Sod is cut to order and must be laid the day it arrives. A quote that does not address timing is not a complete quote.

The physical reality: a pallet weighs 1,500 to 3,000 lb and 12 pallets is a serious amount of lifting, all of which must be done the day it arrives. Two or three people are effectively required for a 5,000 sq ft lawn.

Sod the front, seed the back. The most effective compromise available. Instant results where they are seen, and a fraction of the cost on the larger area.

Buy direct from a sod farm. Cutting out the landscape supplier's markup can save 20 to 30%, though you handle transport.

Do the preparation yourself. Removal, tilling, and grading are unskilled work billed at skilled rates, and they are often 30 to 40% of an installed quote.

Time it for a shoulder season. Autumn and late winter are quieter for sod farms and installers in most markets.

Choose what grows locally. A regionally common grass costs less and arrives fresher than something freighted in.
